Bernedoodle Grooming: The Complete Guide for Pet Parents in McKinney, Allen, Frisco and Plano, TX

playful, low-to-minimal shedding, and absolutely stunning. But that coat? It requires attention, consistency, and a groomer who truly understands the breed.Whether you’re a new Bernedoodle owner or you’ve had your Berner for years, this Dog Grooming Guide covers everything you need to keep that coat healthy, mat-free, and as gorgeous as it deserves to be.

Understanding the Bernedoodle Coat

The Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, and their coat is one of the most variable in the doodle world. Depending on which parent genes dominate, your Bernedoodle can have a wavy coat, a curly coat, or a straighter flat coat. Each type has different grooming requirements.

Curly Coat (Poodle-dominant)

Tight curls that are low-shedding but mat very quickly without regular brushing. Requires professional grooming every 6–8 weeks and brushing at home 3–4 times per week. This is the most common coat type in standard Bernedoodles.

Wavy Coat (the “teddy bear” coat)

The most popular and arguably the most beautiful — loose, flowing waves that are soft to the touch. Slightly higher shedding than curly, but also somewhat more forgiving if brushing is missed. Grooming every 8–10 weeks. Hazel rocks this coat type.

Flat/Straighter Coat

Less common but possible, especially in F1 Bernedoodles. Closer to the Bernese parent. Heavier shedding, but easier to brush through. Still benefits from professional grooming every 10–12 weeks.

💡 A note on matting: Bernedoodle coats — especially curly and wavy types — mat faster than almost any other breed. The key problem areas are behind the ears, armpits, collar line, and rear end. Daily brushing in these spots will save your dog from a painful dematting session.

How Often Should You Groom Your Bernedoodle?

This is the question we get most from new Bernedoodle owners. The short answer: more often than you think.

  • Every 6–8 weeks for curly coats kept in a shorter style
  • Every 8–10 weeks for wavy coats in a medium length
  • Every 10–12 weeks for straighter coats or dogs kept very short
  • More frequently during shedding seasons (March–May and September–November in North Texas)

In between professional appointments, regular at-home brushing is essential. Our blog post on keeping your dog’s coat healthy between grooms has practical tips that apply perfectly to Bernedoodles.

Popular Bernedoodle Haircut Styles

Bernedoodles look incredible in a range of styles — and part of the joy of owning one is customizing their look. Here are the most popular cuts we do on Berners in McKinney and DFW:

The Teddy Bear Cut

Rounded face, fluffy ears, and a plush body kept at 1.5–2 inches all over. This is the classic, adorable Bernedoodle look that most people fall in love with. It’s also our owner’s preferred style for Hazel and Dee Dee.

The Puppy Cut

A shorter, more uniform length (typically ½ inch to 1 inch) all over the body. Easy to maintain, great for Texas summers, and still incredibly cute. Ideal if matting has been an issue.

The Bernese-Inspired Natural Look

For Berners with wavier or flatter coats, some owners prefer a more natural style — longer coat with shaping around the face and paws. Requires more brushing but showcases the breed’s beautiful tri-color markings.

The Summer Shave-Down

In Dallas-Fort Worth summers where temperatures regularly hit 100°F+, many Bernedoodle owners opt for a shorter summer clip to keep their dogs cooler. We work with you to find a style that’s both practical and preserves those beautiful markings. For more on how Texas heat affects your dog’s coat, see our summer grooming guide.

Why Mobile Grooming Is Ideal for Bernedoodles

Bernedoodles are sensitive dogs. They bond deeply with their people, and being dropped off at a busy salon — surrounded by strangers, strange smells, and the sounds of barking — can be genuinely distressing, especially for younger dogs.
Mobile grooming eliminates almost all of those stressors. We come to your driveway, your dog never has to wait in a kennel, and they’re back inside with you within 1–2 hours. Learn more about why mobile grooming benefits dogs of all temperaments.
