If you’ve tried to book a mobile dog groomer in North Texas on short notice, you know how frustrating it can be. The dates you want are gone, the next opening is weeks away, and your doodle is getting fuzzier by the day. This shows why it’s so important to plan ahead and book a mobile pet grooming service well before your pooch needs a wash and trim.
That isn’t just a Collin County thing. Across the industry, mobile groomers report being fully booked months out, and new mobile businesses keep launching to meet demand. Subscription and recurring grooming plans are becoming more popular for the same reason.
At Primped Pooches, we wanted more than a hunch about what this means for our clients. So we looked at our own records, and what we found changed how we talk to pet parents about scheduling.
Why Mobile Pet Grooming Appointments Fill Up so Fast
While a salon can squeeze in one more dog by putting them in a kennel until a groomer is free, a mobile groomer cannot. Every appointment is unique for these reasons.
- One-on-One – One dog (or one household) in the van at a time, one groomer from start to finish.
- Tied to a Route – Our vans travel between McKinney, Frisco, Allen, Plano, Prosper, Celina, Little Elm, The Colony and nearby communities. Drive time between homes is part of every day.
- Limited by Daylight Hours – Our routes run Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Each van has a fixed number of grooms per day, and the demand for mobile grooming keeps rising. Dog ownership climbed from 51% of U.S. households in 2024 to 53% in 2025, about 4 million more homes with dogs.
The result is that clients who are already on a schedule take many of the most-desired slots, while other clients work with the remaining openings.
What Our Mobile Pet Grooming Data Reveals About Scheduling
Keeping your furry best friend looking their best requires more than simply booking the next available appointment. While grooming needs vary from dog to dog, there are certain patterns that can help pet parents plan ahead. To help you secure a spot when your pooch needs one, here are some key insights from our mobile pet grooming data so you can anticipate your pup’s needs and stay on schedule.
1. Recurring Pet Grooming Clients Stay on Schedule
Among our clients, 85.5% returned for another appointment, and 32.7% were on recurring schedules. The second percentage matters greatly, as about one in three pet parents never has to hunt for an opening, as the next visit is already booked.
2. Coat Type Affects Pet Grooming Frequency
When we grouped dogs by coat type we found that double-coated and wire-coated dogs had 100% client retention in our data. Once owners of shedding and wiry breeds find a groomer who handles the coat well, they stay.
Doodles made up 22.1% of our appointments, with 97.7% retention. Curly and doodle coats mat quickly, and their owners learn fast that skipping appointments costs more later.
If you’re dealing with one of these coats, you’re competing with other owners who have already worked this out. Following a seasonal grooming schedule can help Texas pet parents keep these high-maintenance coats in good condition.
3. Regular Pet Grooming Makes Appointments Easier
Our most frequent Golden Retriever clients came back every 4 weeks. That’s more often than many people expect for a Golden, but the benefit shows on the table. When a double-coat is deshedded every few weeks, the undercoat never builds up into a packed, hot, matting layer. The groom is then faster, more comfortable and easier on the dog.
4. Small Dogs Need Consistent Pet Grooming
The clearest warning sign was our Yorkshire Terriers. They averaged 8–12 weeks between appointments, while we recommend every 4 to 6 weeks (28 to 42 days) for that coat. We don’t blame anyone. Small dogs are easy to bathe at home. But fine coats mat close to the skin where you can’t see it. By the time they look bad, the humane fix is often a short shave-down instead of the cute cut the owner wanted.
The Cost of Waiting Too Long Between Pet Grooming Appointments
Letting time slip between grooms has real costs, even if they don’t show up right away.
- Money – Heavy matting commonly adds $25 to $50 to a grooming visit. Dematting is a separate add-on on our service menu as it takes time and skill.
- Comfort – Mats pull on the skin, trap moisture and heat, and can hide hot spots or parasites. Removing mats is uncomfortable, even with a gentle groomer.
- Style – A dog who is overdue for a groom often cannot have the teddy bear or breed cut you love. It’s short or nothing, then several weeks of regrowth.
- Nails, Ears and Teeth – A groom covers more than the coat. Long gaps between grooms mean overgrown nails, dirty ears and skipped tooth brushing.
Keeping on a regular schedule also makes each visit less stressful. A dog who sees the same van with the same routine every 4–6 weeks learns what to expect. For anxious dogs and seniors, the familiarity that mobile pet grooming offers helps as much as the grooming itself.
How to Keep Your Mobile Pet Grooming Appointment
Mobile pet grooming offers so many benefits that appointments tend to fill up quickly. To keep your spot, it’s essential to plan ahead. Whether your four-legged family member needs a routine bath or a professional deshedding treatment, the following tips can help you prepare for a smooth, stress-free appointment.
- Book your next appointment before the van leaves your driveway. This is the easiest habit and the one our regular clients rely on. Pick a date that matches your dog’s coat rhythm while your groomer is still there.
- Ask about a standing schedule. Same day, same timeframe, every 4–6 weeks. It’s the closest thing to a grooming subscription, and it keeps you ahead of the rush.
- Plan ahead for the busy seasons. Holidays, spring shedding, and early summer when the Texas heat arrives always fill up the fastest. If you want your dog groomed before Thanksgiving or for a family photo shoot, book now.
- Keep your dog’s file current. New allergies, medications, health changes or behavior notes help your groomer plan the right amount of time. That helps keep the whole day’s route on schedule.
- Group your household. Multi-pet homes can often be groomed during one stop, back-to-back. This proves to be efficient for you and for the groomer.
